Tika wanted to stop over and meet

Tika is a lovely toddler

with Ocean Green eyes and Chestnut Brown hair.

Her hair is pulled back and falls in a cascade of wavy curls.

Like every little girl, she loves to play dress-up!

St. Patrick's Day Symbols and Traditions

Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind the greeting

"Erin go bragh"

that we often see on St. Patrick's Day?

The meaning is "Ireland for ever."

The Irish immigrated to America

to escape poverty, disease and English oppression.

But coming to America was not a joyful event

because they knew they would never see Ireland again.

Although those who came loved America

and described it as a land of opportunity,

they never gave up their allegiance to Ireland.

The postcards I am sharing today are not part of a series.
They were selected for this post
because they have several things in common.

First, all depict a scene of the Irish countryside.
These cards would have been printed for the American market. One Irish American would have sent the postcard to another
to refresh memories of their home land.

Second, the cards are rich in symbols.
St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland
and the shamrock plant was used
to explain the Holy Trinity.

Four-leaf clovers are also shown
and it is thought that finding one of these rare plants
leads to extremely good luck.
Each leaf of a four-leaf clover brings a different blessing:
hope, faith, love and happiness.

Clay pipes, called Dúidíns, were manufactured
in the village of Knockcroghery, Ireland for over 300 years.
Both men and women smoked the pipes
and they were an important part of an Irish wake ceremony.
The pipe was an inexpensive luxury for the poor
and demonstrated they had sufficient food
to be able to enjoy something extra in their life.

The color green became the national color
because of the green landscape that results
from the plentiful rain and mist that Ireland experiences.
Because of these lush landscapes,
Ireland was bestowed the nickname,
"Emerald Isle".

March's Promise

Yesterday delivered a wet, sloppy snowfall.
The remnants of that icy mix remain on the ground.

But my heart danced when I noticed
the first spring-flowering bulbs blooming this morning.

The miniature cyclamens have awoken

from their protected sleep under the Japanese Maple tree.

Winter in Michigan has not been
very cold or snow-covered this year.

None the less, everyone is anxiously awaiting
some color in the landscape.

The cheery rose-colored petals of the cyclamens
signal that Spring is indeed on the way!

Leap Day Proposal

Were you awarethat Leap Day (February 29) was historically a day for marriage proposals?

Intimes when courtship traditions were stricter, it was the responsibility of theman to ask his sweetheart for her hand in marriage. Unless the date was February 29…

That single day that only comes around everyfour years was set aside for women to take the initiative and proposemarriage. And, men were subject to afine if they refused the proposal.

Some 1912 postcards depict this day in a comical fashion. Men went into hiding on February 29 and those women wishing to propose had to hunt for their man.

The legend goesback to 5^th century Ireland. St. Bridget interceded for women who werelosing patience waiting for their suitor to propose. St. Bridget made a deal with St. Patrick thatgave women the privilege of proposing marriage only on February 29. The thinking was that since Leap Day existedto fix a flaw in the calendar, the day could also be used to fix an unjustcourtship ritual.

In Celebration of Presidents' Day

When was the last time you sent someone a greeting card to commemorate Presidents' Day?

Or, before Presidents' Day was declared in 1971,

did you share greetings for

George Washington's birthday on February 22?

Or Abraham Lincoln's birthday on February 12?

It was once common to exchange postcards on important dates and, like other major holidays, our ancestors sent postcards to celebrate the Washington and Lincoln birthdays.

I have prepared a small vignette for Presidents' Day

to honor these two important men in our history.

According to the Dates in History website,

the first TeddyBear was introduced in America
on February 15, 1903.

You may already know that the Teddy Bear was named after PresidentTheodore Roosevelt. But what is the restof the story?

The Governorsof the states of Mississippi and Louisiana invited President Roosevelt to visittheir states in 1902 to arbitrate a dispute about the location of theircommon boundary. Since the boundary wason undeveloped land and the President was an outdoorsman, he decided to combinea black-bear hunt with the trip.

After days ofunsuccessful hunting for a trophy bear, some hunting companions found an oldinjured bear and tied it to a tree. The Presidentwas invited to shoot the bear so that his reputation as a successful huntercould be reported by the press that accompanied the hunting party. The President refused stating that he only tookprey that had a sporting chance of defending themselves.

The event was documentedin a series of political cartoons intended to demonstrate the President’scompassion. In the cartoons, the imageof the old bear was changed to show an image of a bear cub.

Morris Michtom sawthat cartoon. Morris operated a smallshop in New York selling notions, candy and other small items. His wife, Rose, sewed the toys sold in theshop. Morris suggested to Rose that shesew a replica of the bear cub depicted in the cartoon. Rose cut a piece of plush velvet into the shapeof a bear and stuffed it, adding shoe buttons for eyes. Morris placed it on display in the store’swindow and labeled it “Teddy’s bear”.

The bearsbecame so popular, the Michtom’s dedicated their full time to producing them. Thislabor of love grew into the Ideal Toy Company.

The originalbear created by Rose was given to the grandson of Teddy Roosevelt in 1963 byBenjamin Michtom, the son of Morris and Rose. The Roosevelt family then donated the bear to the Smithsonian Institute.

Cupid or Cherub?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Today I am sharing some sweet images
of some romantic tiny winged spiritual beings.

Tiny winged spiritual beings ? ? ?

I originally planned to refer to these images as cherubs.
According to Webster's dictionary,
one of the definitions of cherub
is a beautiful winged child that is represented in art.

OK, that definition fits.

But then,
I questioned whether these were images of Cupid.
Can you have more than one image of Cupid
depicted in a single piece of art?

Again, according to Webster,
cupid (with a lower case c)
is a winged infantile figure representing Cupid,
often holding a bow and arrow.

OK, one of the spiritual beings
is carrying a quiver filled with arrows.

Cupid or Cherub? What do you think?

Spooning Under the Moon

Do you know the meaning of the old fashioned word "spooning"?

It simply means to cuddle and kiss.

Heart of the Home

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to add a bit of pink to my home's decor.

Some Spring floral garland, white net ribbon, paper doily hearts

and scrapbook embellishments add some seasonal inspiration

to a collection of candle sticks on the mantle.

From another angle, you can see both the fireplace mantle and the wall hanging

I told you about in my post titled "A Hug and A Kiss".

A vintage postcard published by John Winsch in 1910

has been framed and exhibits the romance of the Victorian era.

A nosegay of pink roses sits on a table
next to an angel who carries a Valentine token.

Two pillows featuring love birds are displayed on a favorite chair.

And of course, my seasonal doll is dressed in a delicate white dress

with pink trim as she welcomes Valentine's Day.

Clouds and Sea

This week's Valentine's Day postcards

are dramatically different than the Ribbon and Lace

postcards shared with you last week.

These are much more masculine

with images of sailboats on the sea.

But they are every bit as romantic upon closer inspection.

with a vertical orientation is shown below.

The cloud formations depict a couple sharing a kiss.

The rippling waves in the foreground

spell out the word LOVE.

Look closely at the postcard with the horizontal orientation.

The strong wave crashing against the rock formation

forms the image of a woman

and the rocks show the sturdy face of a man.

The wave is about to embrace the jagged rocks.

Again, the word LOVE is spelled by the calmer waves.

I don't know whether there are additional postcards in this series. These cards are not commonly seen.

They were purchased at two different postcard shows

and I have never seen the cards

A Hug and A Kiss

As I started taking out my Valentine's Day decorations, it occurred to me that I had never written a post about my quilting projects. I've been quilting since 2001 but I still consider myself a beginner. I have made one large quilt and the rest have been lap size or wall hangings. There are still so many techniques and patterns I want to attempt to master!

This wall hanging was made in 2010. It is a two block applique quilt that I named "A Hug and A Kiss". The buttonhole stitch around the applique was done by hand. The quilting on this wall hanging was done by machine.

The top block features a circle surrounded by hearts (the hug).

Crossed bars with a heart at each end (the kiss) are the basis of the bottom block.

This wall hanging was was inspired by a quilt I admired in the July/August 2006 issue of Fons & Porter Love of Quilting magazine. The quilt was designed by Mimi Dietrich in a Baltimore Album style. Since the inspiration quilt was made of four blocks, the original name was "Hugs & Kisses" (plural).

My "A Hug and a Kiss" quilt was a low cost project. The only newly purchased items for this project were the pink flower shaped buttons used to embellish the blocks. The log cabin blocks used as the background for the applique were left over from another quilt I made in 2006. The appliqued pink hearts and green leaves were cut from scraps of fabric found in my stash.

My earlier 2006 project was made entirely from log cabin blocks and the layout forms a heart in the center. Most of the log cabin blocks were made entirely of cream colored fabrics. Two blocks are entirely made of varied pink fabrics. Eight blocks were made the traditional way using half light and half dark fabrics. I originally intended to use some of the half light/half dark blocks to add some pink in the corners. But when I was working on the block layout, I thought the heart center needed to be the feature of the quilt and the additional color detracted. That's why I ended up with extra blocks for the wall hanging.

Since the fabric used for the borders and backing featured the word Love in varied fonts, this log cabin Valentine quilt is named "Surrounded by Love". I like to make my quilt labels using a miniature block that repeats a block from the quilt itself.

"Surrounded by Love" was hand quilted. The outer cream portions were quilted in a grid pattern. The pink fabric center is quilted with repeating heart wreaths. You can see some of the hearts clearly in the darkest fabric.

Ribbon and Lace

Valentine's Day is just a few weeks away.

To reflect the spirit of this romantic holiday,

I would like to share a series of antique postcards.

Each of the postcards bears a cherub,

colorful ribbon shaped into a heart that is surrounded by

a frame of cheerful posies and a lacy border.

A rhyme on each card expresses loving sentiments.

The manufacturer is unknown.

The only marking on the back states

Heart Valentine Series No. 2.

The cards date to the year 1910.

Snow Crystals

We all have heard that no two snowflakes are alike. But did you ever stop to think about how this discovery was made? I never gave this much thought until a visit to Vermont a few years ago. A tour guide recommended a visit to the snowflake museum. A snowflake museum?! How intriguing!

William A. Bentley (1865-1931) was born in Jericho, Vermont. He dedicated his life to the study of snow, frost and rain.

During his lifetime, he took over 5,000 images of snowflakes. Because of this dedication, William Bentley soon became known as "Snowflake Bentley".

To do his work, a camera was attached to a microscope and the resulting image is called a photomicrograph. Due to the fragile nature of a snowflake, this work was done in an environment that equaled the temperature where the snowflake was recovered.

As a memento of the visit to the museum, I purchased a book that contains almost half of the images captured by Mr. Bentley. You might enjoy viewing a few pages.

Mr. Bentley used the name SNOW CRYSTALS

in his work rather than snowflakes,

thus the name of the book.

All snowflakes are six-sided hexagons.
We don't typically see smooth hexagons

and think of snowflakes

but these are common snow crystal shapes.

Images on these pages almost look like triangles.

But closer inspection shows

the corners are flat rather than pointed

so these meet the six-sided requirement of a hexagon.

With six rounded petals,

these images could be called ice flowers!

The final photo shows the variations

of the pointed-star shape

traditionally associated with the image of a snowflake.

Midland's Snowy Blanket

No snow for Christmas...

No snow the entire month of December...

But, last night the snow finally arrived in Midland,
in Michigan, and in many other states.

Not the destructive volumes of snow that buried cities in Alaska.

Not enough snow to close local schools.

But enough to cover the brown winter landscape.

Just a pretty, fluffy white blanket of snow.

Winter wonderland view outside my bedroom window.

Pine tree tip bends from the weight of the snow.

The bird feeder looks so tiny next to the mature trees.

I'll get my coat and head outside so I can get some close-up shots.

The snowmen placed on the decorative fence in December

frame the front entryway.

A picture perfect evergreen!

And the snowman puffs his rosy cheeks

and smiles at the beauty that surrounds him.

The prominent symbol on this postcard is the guardian angel

to protect and guard you.

The angel is lifting a horseshoe, which is a symbol of good luck.

There are varied viewpoints on which way the opening should be pointed.

Some believe that the shoe must point up or the luck will run out.

Others insist it must point down so the luck can pour onto you.

Next you may notice the four-leaf clover plant on the right.

One leaf is for Faith
The second for Hope
The third for Love
And the fourth for Luck

The left side of the card includes bags of gold coins,

a wish for prosperity.

The red-berried holly branch has been regarded as symbolic

of strength, protection, good will and everlasting life.

A New Image for the New Year

A natural tendency at the beginning of a New Year is to make a fresh start to our activities and routines.

For me, it was time to "redecorate" this blog page that is now six months old.

My former banner was fairly simple.

Some of the goals for the redesign:

Enhance with more color
Showcase some favorite dolls
Exhibit whimsy or playfulness

The process started with the addition of some photographs of favorite dolls. I tried different arrangements for these photos but the banner still looked a bit reserved and needed more pop.

On-line digital scrapbook sites provided inspiration. The blue dot background and scrapbook embellishments helped achieve the desired look for the page. Thanks to Marie Stones at freedigitalscrapbooking.com for the materials available for free download via her site.

Each of you have shared so much knowledge in your posts and by example on your pages. Thanks for guiding this newbie and offering your tips.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

1975 was the year of our first Christmas as a married couple. Wanting to begin our own family traditions, I made a Christmas tree skirt that depicted images from the holiday song, The Twelve Days of Christmas. I recently read a religious explanation for this holiday song, and I would like to pair these descriptions with closeup photos of the tree skirt that is now gracing our tree for its 37th Christmas.

The "Twelve Days," of course, stand for the Christmas season, between December 25 and January 6, and the "True Love" in the carol is God Himself, who gives Christians special gifts on each of the 12 days.

The first gift, "a partridge in a pear tree" symbolizes Christ as a bird,

gathering His young under His wings,

and the tree recalls the tree of Paradise which Adam lost by sin

and Christ promised to restore.

The first gift, therefore is God's own Son, Jesus.

"Two turtle doves"

represent the Jewish family's sacrifice in the temple when a son was born.

Our sacrifice today is the Divine Liturgy.

"Three French hens"

symbolizes the gifts of the Magi to the Baby Jesus,

or also the gifts of faith, hope and charity

realized in the Savior's birth.

"Four calling birds"

are the four evangelists, whose words tell the story of Jesus' coming.

"Five golden rings"

suggest the first five books of the Old Testament, the Law,

which Christ came to fulfill.

"Six geese-a-laying"

suggest the six days of the week when people work

to bring forth the fruit of the land.

"Seven swans a-swimming"

suggest the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit

or even the seven works of mercy.

"Eight maids a-milking"

represent the eight Beatitudes,

which are a Christian's nourishment.

"Nine ladies dancing"

are the nine ranks of angels or

the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit listed by St. Paul in Galatians 5:22.

"Ten lords a-leaping"

obviously the Ten Commandments.

"Eleven pipers piping"

are the Apostles, now without Judas,

who went out to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.

"Twelve drummers drumming"

represent the 12 articles of faith in the Nicene Creed.

And a happy "Twelve Days" to you all.

The showcase of our holiday decorating is our Christmas tree. Each year we add a few more ornaments to our collection. We always wonder how we could possibly find room on the tree for more treasures but it is tradition to add something new each year.

Here is a daytime photo of the tree since the ornaments show up better in this lighting.

This is one of our oldest ornaments. As you can see, blue decorations have always been a favorite.

Many of our ornaments are handmade -- some I made, some are gifts from friends.

We also hunt for special ornaments throughout the year. Whenever we travel, we typically bring home an ornament that represents that vacation spot.

We love brass ornaments and especially look for dated white ball ornaments with images of Norman Rockwell, Beatrice Potter, Hummel or some other artist's images.

Reproductions of Christmas stamps are among my personal favorites.

Once evening arrives, the miniature lights create a magical effect.

I am always delighted to find non-traditional images of Santa. This image shows so much motion. His purple cloak is flying in the wind. There is a definite breeze flowing through his white whiskers. And, you can almost see the wheels of his cycle spinning.

Christmas Toys

You can't think of Christmas without thinking of toys. No, not all of the electronic, high tech goodies available today. I'm thinking of the old fashioned kind -- things that children (and adults) have enjoyed throughout history.

If you have ever watched a production of the Nutcracker Ballet, you know that Clara is given a nutcracker as a gift and dreams that the soldier nutcracker becomes real. Many nutcrackers are depicted as soldiers. However, the nutcrackers who stand guard at the base of our stairway are not in this traditional image.

Here is a close up photo

of the two stairway sentries who greet visitors to our home.

The nutcracker on the right is an image of the composer Tchaikovski. Dressed in a blue velvet cape, maroon vest and fur hat, he holds his baton high to summon the start of the music for the ballet. He is accompanied by a pink-eared mouse and two other characters from the story.

The nutcracker on the left depicts Ebenezer Scrooge. He is all business with his spectacles, briefcase and account ledger. But in recognition of the softer side that Scrooge will display after visits from the Christmas ghosts, his dapper bow tie is made from fabric with a colorful parrot motif.

The chair near the fireplace in our family room is the perfect resting spot for a soft fuzzy ball of white fur. This teddy bear is appropriately named Fluff.

Fluff introduces a snowman theme into this room. He holds a small pillow. Although you cannot read the writing at the bottom of the pillow in this picture, it is captioned, The Coolest Guys Around.

Another area of the room displays a sleigh with three bears as passengers.

You have seen my "seasonal" doll before. She always dresses for the occasion. Her Christmas dress is made of sheer fabric with delicate snowmen. Of course, she carries a glittery snowman to continue the theme.

There is one more doll on display that is the guardian angel of our Christmas tree. She was received as a gift from family friends a number of years ago. She is a Zapf Creation, a European manufacturer of dolls. It would not be Christmas at our home without this angel standing near the tree.

Santa's Round the World Ride

In this antique postcard, Santa is not making his toy deliveries in a sleigh pulled by tiny reindeer. Here he makes his round the world ride in a dirigible.

This card is also unique because silk clothing is worn by both Santa and the doll to be delivered to some lucky child. Actual silk fabric is applied to portions of the postcard.

Our local historical society will be displaying some of my Christmas postcards as part of their holiday display. The cards that I selected for this year center around the theme of Santa's transportation. This is one of the cards included in that exhibit.

The Golden Age of Postcards covered the period between 1898-1918. Picture postcards on every imaginable holiday were exchanged. Various "gift-givers" were popular subjects of Christmas postcards.

St. Nicholas, one of the earliest Old World legends was based on an actual person, the bishop of Myra. He is known for his generosity and deeds involving children in distress. The date of his death, December 6, was commemorated with an annual feast. Youngsters would set out food for the saint and obedient children would find their gifts replaced with sweets and toys. After the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century, the veneration of Catholic saints was banned. But people had become accustomed to the annual visit from the gift-bearing saint. Gift bearers began to take on a non-religious appearance but still reflected St. Nicholas generous spirit. As each country adopted their own gift bearing figure, there was no common agreement on how he looked so there are many variations in artists' images.

The Cart of Plenty

Oh what a sight! This young lad is guiding his team of TURKEYS to the Thanksgiving feast. They are actually pulling a cart filled with roast turkey and juicy fruit. They must be thankful they are doing the heavy work and are not the feast (at least not this dinner). A very whimsical antique postcard that was mailed in 1908 from Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Old Mission Peninsula Quilt Barn Trail

The beautiful autumn weather we have continued to enjoy in Michigan provided an opportunity for a fall color tour. It is past prime viewing season for the changing colors of leaves, in fact most leaves have already fallen to the ground. The tour we will take today covers the bountiful colors that can be found following the Quilt Barn Trail on Old Mission Peninsula near Traverse City. There are currently 14 private farms that prominently display a painted quilt block on the side of their barn. Since these quilt blocks are on private farms, I was not able to get close enough to photograph them all but have a dozen to share with you.

Our first stop features a barn with a Maple Leaf pattern

to represent the stately maples that once lined some of the roads on Old Mission Peninsula.

This barn dates to 1904. The quilt block highlights the sun, water and rolling fields of the peninsula.

The owners of this barn pioneered contour plowing.

A sign in front of this charming barn proudly displays the name "Bewitched Farm".

The owner was born on Halloween and the quilt block keeps with that theme.

The owners of this barn also own one of the local vineyards.

The quilt square reflects the starlings that fly over the vineyard each fall.

The Nine-Patch block symbolizes faith, citizenship, heritage and farm life.

The barn dates to 1912.

This small barn featuring a Crazy Quilt block almost looks like a play house for a child.

Note the cherries painted on the window boxes.

The Celtic Cross honors the family ancestors who originally farmed in Ireland and Scotland.

The Chown barn was built in 1870 and features a modified Bear Paw block.

The pattern was reproduced from a quilt made by the owner's great-grandmother and her sister-in-law.

A Le Moyne Star is featured on this 1909 barn.

A windmill pattern quilt block is featured on this 1880 barn.

The center motif honors the farm's primary crop -- cherries.

The wood for this barn was harvested from farm property over 100 years ago.

The rocks for the foundation were also gathered from the farm's fields.

The quilt pattern features an arrowhead design.

Our final stop is a barn erected in 1910 that now houses an antique shop.

The quilt block features tulips.

You noticed several references to cherries in the quilt blocks. The first cherry orchard was planted on Old Mission Peninsula in 1852. Today Michigan produces 70-75% of the tart cherries grown in the United States. Most of the 3.8 million tart cherry trees are in the Traverse City area. Michigan's sweet cherry production is also concentrated near Traverse City.

Children's Harvest Festival Game

Seeking liberty the Pilgrims left Plymouth, England on the Mayflower in September 1620 arriving in Massachusetts in late November. Unprepared for the harsh winter, half of the 102 Pilgrims did not survive the first winter due to starvation and sickness. With much prayer and assistance from the Native Americans, the surviving Pilgrims enjoyed a bountiful harvest in 1621. In celebration of the successful season, a three day harvest festival was celebrated by the Pilgrims and their Native American friends. This is considered to be the first U.S. Thanksgiving.

There were 32 children listed as passengers on the Mayflower. Today's postcard depicts two of these young Pilgrims playing games with their new friends. You can almost hear the laughter and singing as these children dance around the pumpkin.

As I was looking through my Thanksgiving antique postcards to find one to share with you, I spotted this young man carving a pumpkin. Thought this was perfect to transition from Halloween that we celebrated earlier this week into this month's season of giving thanks.

Upon closer examination, I noticed that the card was postmarked from Pottstown, PA on November 5, 1909 -- 102 years ago. Perfect for a posting on November 5, 2011.

Decor to Welcome Thanksgiving

Welcome Thanksgiving! Let's begin a tour of seasonal decor as you come in the front door. As might be expected upon entering a doll maker's home, you will be greeted by a sweet toddler. She gets in the spirit of the holidays by changing her attire to reflect the season. Now she is wearing a dress with a green velveteen bodice and a plaid skirt featuring the burgundy, green and gold colors of the season.

A narrow wall of the foyer displays a Jim Shore wall banner highlighting a pilgrim couple. This banner was difficult to photograph due to the length so I hope the detail comes through.

This cute pillow came from Hobby Lobby. I was attracted to the nubby background fabric that blends with the fabric of my favorite comfy chair.

This would be an easy project for the quilter who has a stash of scraps since the greeting is appliqued using a variety of colorful fabrics and trims.

A whimsical turkey brings spirit to the kitchen counter. Some metallic copper-colored ribbon has been wrapped around the pumpkin to give it a more polished look.

This carved pumpkin was also from Hobby Lobby. I couldn't resist the sweet children giving thanks.

The carved pumpkin placed along with candles, leaves and glass berries makes an elegant display on the dining room table.

Moonlight Flight

An antique postcard that features the fantasy of a witch in flight.

The witch and trees are vividly silhouetted against the bright yellow full moon.

If you look closely, spider webs can be seen in the tree tops.

Even though it is nighttime,

the deep blue of the sky is evident

as well as the green field beneath the witch’s flight path.

The gold, orange and black block border

adds an additional level of interest to this antique postcard.

Trick-or-Treaters Path

There is a fairly long walk (especially for a child in a hurry to claim their Halloween treat) from the sidewalk to our front porch. The trick-or-treaters are focused on the treat they will soon receive and don't notice any of the outside plants or decorations. The adult chaperones for the youngsters may take notice.

The walk leading to the front porch is shades of purple, pink and white thanks to the planting of Ornamental Kale.

These plants are interesting all season but take on their vibrant color when the temperature begin to drop.

Most of the trees in our yard have dropped their leaves. But the Japanese Maples still bear their crimson foliage.

A sweet witch, crafted by a local artist, greets visitors at the front door. She has added spirit to my porch for a number of Halloweens.

The ornamental gourds on her hat have been replaced since the birds keep sampling the fruit. I'm sure they are surprised when they don't get a tasty morsel after all of their work!

A simple greeting . . .

Jack O'Lantern Ghost

Pumpkins and So Much More

My Halloween decorating style is more sweet than scary.

You will be greeted by a jack-o-lantern --

or I should say one of my favorite dolls disguised as a pumpkin.

Her trick-or-treat bag is already full of goodies.

And unlike Little Miss Muffet, she hasn't been frightened away

by the great spider who landed on her pumpkin-top hat.

Harvest angels grace the mantle.

An antique postcard has been framed and shares a prominent spot.

In the kitchen, a Debbie Mumm designed plate features a haunted house.

Seasonal cupcake candles complete the display.

Going outside, the angel theme is repeated
near a decorative fence by the back patio.

And a metal pumpkin welcomes visitors to the pumpkin patch.

These real pumpkins belong to a neighbor.

Their garden is on the other side of the fence.

The pumpkin vines meandered under the fence and the effect looks intentional.

Mother Nature certainly knows how to show off!

Halloween Fantasy - The Witches Dance

This week’s antique postcard is titled “The Witch’s Dance” on the face of the card. Unlike the romantic postcard highlighted in an earlier post, this artwork features more traditional images of a witch and pumpkins. However, our ancestors had a more lighthearted view of the holiday.

You will notice the witch is young, pretty and dressed in stylish red gown. The pumpkins are given human attributes --frolicking under the bright yellow crescent moon. And even the black cat joins in the merrymaking in celebration of the magical Halloween holiday.

Vivid autumn colors of orange, green, red and yellow are prominent making the card desirable for collectors of both yesterday and today.

Shelburne Museum Miniatures

One of the highlights of a visit to the Shelburne Museum in Vermont is the Kirk Bros. Circus that was carved by Edgar Decker Kirk over a period of more than 40 years from 1910-1956. A three-ring circus complete with audience was carved using a simple penknife and a foot-powered jigsaw. The collection numbering over 3,500 pieces was originally a toy for the four Kirk children.

Halloween Lore - Romantic Reflections

During the weeks approaching Halloween, I thought you would enjoy a bit of folklore and Halloween images drawn from a combination of classic mythology and superstition. One of the most common customs shown on antique postcards depicts a maiden following rituals for a glimpse into the future to identify her future true love. Unlike today's Halloween traditions, our ancestors viewed Halloween as a romantic holiday. It is a little known fact that St. Matrimony is the patron saint of Halloween!

Baby Dolls That Look Real with Inner Glow

A new technique was introduced in Fall 2010 that brings a new level of realism and results in baby dolls that look real without the high cost associated with a reborn doll. Inner Glow uses a specially formulated blue dye on the inside of extra-light semi-transparent vinyl. The result is a natural skin tone that mimics the depth and richness of real skin. Introducing Bear-ry Holidays

Midland is dark and rainy today and the wind sock outside my window is spinning wildly. Mother Nature is is giving a not so gentle reminder that the seasons are changing and cold weather preparations should begin. With that thought in mind, we have added a holiday doll to our Doll in the Looking Glass boutique.

Bear-ry Holidays was created using Bailey, one of my personal favorite faces from Apple Valley Dolls. She has a soulful expression and views the world through hazel eyes. Light brown hair is styled in a simple bob with multi-color ribbons pulling her hair to one side. This doll has a fully jointed 22-inch body with a light skin tone.

Bear-ry Holidays is wearing a pink jumper that features colorful applique of bears at play in winter. This outfit is from a holiday collection of real children's wear. Here is a close-up of the sweet applique.

Ornamental Kale - Fall Landscape Star

Today as I was walking down the path to my front porch I was struck by the beauty of the Ornamental Kale plants. Now that the crisp fall weather has arrived the magic and true beauty of the plant becomes evident. All summer long it is basically ruffled green foliage. It does look like a cabbage plant and people have been asking about it – thinking I planted vegetables between the flowers. Why do I say magic? The cooler temperatures change the center of the plant to shades of white, pink or purple. And these plants are huge. Each measure about 20-inches tall and the flower heads are about 16-inches wide. The plants prefer full sun -- those receiving their preferred lighting stand proud and upright. Plants getting more shade tend to become lazy and rest their stems along the ground but are still very showy in this reclining position.

Ornamental Kale is easy to grow from seedlings planted in the Spring. Adding Ornamental Kale to your garden will assure color in your landscape through the entire season. Although these are annuals, their vivid colors will still be visible peeking beneath the early snowfalls. But I am getting ahead of myself – it is just barely Fall and we have lots of nice weather ahead in Midland.

Today's spotlight is on two of the dresses currently in available in our boutique that you can select for your custom doll creation. The front of each dress features a white bib collar with beaded lace down the center and an underlay of pastel satin ribbon. Gathered lace trims the collar edge and a ribbon rose adds the finishing touch to the delicate bodice.

You really must see the detailing on the back of these dresses. The collars reach across the shoulders and continue to the waistline. Their ruffled skirts scoop up in the back to show off a white underskirt that is covered with rows of lace. To be honest, the back of these dresses may be prettier than the front!

The crispness of Fall is in the air which means it is prime viewing season for Midland's local garden dedicated to showcasing the varied beauty of dahlias. At Dahlia Hill you will delight in 3,000 plants representing 250 varieties planted on 8 stone terraces. Dahlia Hill is a not-for-profit with the goal of education on the dahlia species. Their show quality dahlias in a garden setting are cared for by community volunteers.

So grab your jacket and stroll along with me through the garden.

Hot Air Balloons Are Coming!

Remember to watch the sky September 15-17 as the RE/MAX Balloon Festival marks the official kick-off of the United Way campaign in Midland.

Hot air balloons will be tethered along Main Street on the evening of September 15 with the evening GLOW scheduled for dusk.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning launches are scheduled for 7:30 am. The Friday and Saturday evening launches begin at 6 pm.

Even if your weekend schedule doesn't allow you to officially dedicate time to the balloon fest events, be sure to look up from whatever activity you are enjoying. You never know where the balloons will appear after they have launched. Listen for the unmistakable whoosh as the burner releases fuel to keep the balloon inflated. If you are lucky, the flight plan may take the hot air balloon right over your home.

Labor Day has been recognized as a U.S. national holiday since 1894 to honor the everyday working people who helped build American industry. Celebrate yourself this weekend. You are the heartbeat of America contributing to the economic recovery of our nation.

Our ancestors sent holiday greetings to friends and family for every major holiday. Although somewhat rare, Labor Day cards were also exchanged. The image shared with you displays the patriotism of the period. Lady Liberty partners with laborers to express hope for the promise of a better tomorrow -- the American dream.

Doll in the Looking Glass has named this collectible doll Lavender Ice inspired by the pale color of her dress. Dress features pointe d'esprit netting with an embroidered collar accenting the bodice. Neckline, sleeves and skirt are trimmed with venice lace. An extra-wide lace on the underskirt enhances the fullness of the dress.

Lavender Ice is a dramatic beauty with Victorian Blue eyes and Dark Brown-Black hair upswept into small ringlets on top. This specialty doll was created using the Jilly Bean expression from Apple Valley Dolls. She stands 24 inches tall as a result of her custom made doe-skin body with fully hinged arms and legs.
